The Wave Sliders journal

ENTRY # 034

Written By: Tom Bracht

Today's Wave Sliders Journal is a treat for everyone, but especially for our East Coast fam.

If you don't know Tom and Brothers Surf Craft, you should. I was lucky enough to connect with Tom on a phone call a few months back—what was supposed to last 5 minutes turned into over an hour of great conversation.

We got to riffing on surfboards, the meaning of quality, patience, and progression, and the work-life balance we all strive for.

Dive into his WSJ below for a deeper exploration of Tom and Brothers Surf Craft...

Who are you?

Share a few sentences explaining who you see yourself as these days...

--

Husband, father, surfer, board builder. I've heard people describe me as a simple person, as if that's bad thing. I don't know if that is like a backhanded compliment or what, but I'm happy.

I love what I get to do every day. Hand-shaping, glassing, sanding...it's hard labor don't get me wrong, but get I build surfboards with my best friend who happens to be my brother. That's pretty special.

I love living where I do, my house is maybe 7 minutes from my favorite wave, and I love who I get to spend my time outside of work with. My wife and daughter are how I view wealth, like real wealth. I feel blessed to be "simple".

What was your first job?

First jobs reveal a lot about who we were.

--

My first job goes back to high school, I worked at a Dairy Queen. I only lasted like 2 weeks. Funny story, when someone orders a blizzard you are supposed to give it to them upside down at the register, but something people don't think about is when someone orders a blizzard with M&Ms or anything with a hard, crunchy shell, the mixer will often crack the candy in sharp little pieces...blending at high speeds which will often times cut the inside of the cup.

Easy fix, or so I was told, just double cup it. Well you can guess what happened when I handed over a double cupped blizzard upside down to a customer. Splat!

What have you learned through surfing that translates to everyday life?

--

Surfing forces you to be present in the moment. Fully locked in. There's times when you aren't comfortable, just like in life it's good to step outside your comfort zone.

Learn to trust yourself and make decisions, take risks, figure things out, and stay calm even when you're about to get cleaned up. There's so many...

What is something you'd like to accomplish in the next 10 years?

--

My goal is to always keep progressing, never stop.

My brother and I always say we can get better. Whether it's our brand, our skills, or the tools - or just our own surfing. I know the best is yet to come.

What Tom Is Stoked On Lately...

Someone in the surf community you are stoked on:

You know we are lucky to have such a cool family of characters that really push our boards, our brand, and my shaping. I love them all. We wouldn't be where we are today without them.

That being said, there's two that come to mind: Curtis Purdue - his style and body control on a longboard is so pleasing to watch. He surfs days when it's literally freezing outside, New England cold is another level of cold. You have to want it when it's that cold, and you can tell he loves it. It's pure why he's out there. He's always fun to shape for.

Another joy to work with is Jesse Hines. In a totally different way, he is never satisfied and it is always a challenge when working with someone like that. Jesse is after a feeling, he knows whether the board is good or not in like 3 sessions. What he does in big gnarly waves, often times on our Channel Twin is incredible. No one believes he is on a Twin until he flips over his board after just getting spit out of a barrel.

All of the crew of people that ride our boards surf really well, but I'm more stoked on them as people. Most of them work jobs, have families, responsibilities, bills, etc - but they all find time to get after it in the water. They all are pushing themselves in life. They all pay for their boards, and as a small company that is so huge, they believe in what we make so much they rather pay then being handed something free from bigger companies. That is what inspires me.

A quote you like?

Long strokes.

A place you want to visit that you have not been to yet?
